Every great heritage fabric has a story. The story of Shweshwe is one of culture, identity and tradition. The story of Three Cats™ is one of craftsmanship, manufacturing and an extraordinary journey across continents. For generations, the familiar Three Cats™ mark has been recognised as a symbol of authenticity. Printed on the reverse of the fabric and woven into the memories of countless families, it has become one of the most trusted names associated with Shweshwe. Yet few people realise that the story begins not in South Africa, but in the textile heartland of Lancashire, England. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Lancashire became the centre of the world's cotton industry. Manchester was its commercial capital, earning the nickname 'Cottonopolis' as merchants exported textiles across the globe. Among the fabrics produced were indigo discharge prints – beautifully patterned cottons inspired by the European blue-print tradition known as Blaudruck. It was within this thriving textile industry that the Three Cats™ brand emerged. The earliest verified records place the trademark in Manchester during the late 1940s, owned by Spruce Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a company involved in the export textile trade. The distinctive mark of three cat heads quickly became associated with quality, authenticity and beautifully printed indigo fabrics destined for markets far beyond Britain.
The story of Three Cats™ extends beyond Manchester into the wider British textile industry. The indigo discharge printing techniques used to create the fabric were rooted in Central European traditions, particularly in Germany and Hungary. During the twentieth century, these specialist skills were preserved and developed by manufacturers in Lancashire and surrounding towns. Among them was Hungarian textile manufacturer Gustav Deutsch, who continued the production of indigo discharge printed fabrics through Blue Printers Ltd. in Wigan. Together with other British manufacturers, these companies helped preserve a highly specialised printing tradition that might otherwise have disappeared. While Three Cats™ was manufactured in Britain, its future lay elsewhere.
The trademark was developed specifically for export markets across Africa, where indigo printed fabrics were already highly valued. Over decades of trade, the fabric travelled throughout the continent, becoming particularly cherished in Southern Africa. There, the fabric became woven into ceremonies, celebrations, weddings and cultural identity. Over time, Three Cats™ became more than a textile brand. It became part of family tradition and community life, eventually becoming inseparable from the story of Shweshwe itself. As demand continued to grow, the next chapter of the story unfolded. In 1982, traditional indigo discharge printing technology was introduced into South Africa through a partnership involving Tootal, then owners of the Three Cats™ brand, and Da Gama Textiles in the Eastern Cape. For the first time, authentic Three Cats™ fabrics could be produced locally using the same specialist techniques that had been refined in Britain over generations.
A decade later, in 1992, Da Gama acquired the rights to the Three Cats™ brand together with the original copper printing rollers, design archives and specialist machinery used to produce the fabric. These copper rollers represented decades of textile craftsmanship. Their transfer from Britain to South Africa ensured that the heritage, authenticity and distinctive character of Three Cats™ would be preserved for future generations. Like many traditional textile manufacturers around the world, Da Gama faced significant challenges during the early twenty-first century. A major turning point came in 2014 when the company was acquired by Cowie Trading, a family-owned South African business led by Neil Cowie. The acquisition helped secure the future of the mill and ensured that authentic Three Cats™ Shweshwe would continue to be produced in the Eastern Cape. The story of Three Cats™ has always been one of travel. From the blue-print traditions of Central Europe. To the mills and warehouses of Lancashire. To the communities and cultures of Southern Africa. And now, in many ways, back to Britain once more. The Journey Comes Full Circle Today, that remarkable journey has come full circle. Born in the textile mills of Lancashire, embraced by generations across Southern Africa and preserved through South African craftsmanship, authentic Three Cats™ Shweshwe is once again becoming available in the United Kingdom. Through Fabric Story Studio, more than 200 authentic designs are returning to British makers, quilters, designers and textile enthusiasts — reconnecting a unique textile heritage with its original homeland. At Fabric Story Studio, we are proud to be part of the latest chapter in that journey. While we are not the first to bring authentic Three Cats™ Shweshwe back to the United Kingdom, we are honoured to help reconnect this remarkable heritage fabric with a new generation of makers, quilters, designers and textile enthusiasts.
